According to a recent study in the journal Hepatology, increased caffeine intake could reduce the risk of non alcoholic fatty liver disease.

The study showed that consuming around 4 cups of coffee or tea a day, may prevent and protect against the progression if NAFLD in humans.

People with NAFLD, have an increased build up of fat in their liver cells unrelated to alcohol consumption. This increased level of fat disturbs the function of the liver and can lead to elevated lover enzymes and affect the normal processes of the liver.

Up to a quarter of Americans have the disease and there is no treatment apart from prevention through diet and exercise.

Further studies will now be conducted to try and establish the benefits of caffeine
