HIV Testing, PrEP & Treatment in Canary Wharf

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) can lead to AIDS if left untreated, but with modern medicine, it is now a highly manageable long-term condition. With early diagnosis and consistent treatment, most people living with HIV remain well and can expect a near-normal life expectancy.

In the UK, new HIV diagnoses have fallen markedly, down by around 30% overall, and nearly 40% among men who have sex with men (MSM) driven by wider testing, rapid treatment after diagnosis, and PrEP. Despite this progress, regular testing and prevention remain essential.

How HIV Is Transmitted

HIV is transmitted through certain bodily fluids, including:

  • Semen

  • Vaginal fluids

  • Rectal fluids

  • Blood

  • Breast milk

In the UK, HIV is mainly spread through:

  • Unprotected anal or vaginal sex

  • Sharing needles or drug paraphernalia

Mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy or birth is now rare in the UK due to routine screening and treatment. Transmission through blood transfusions is extremely rare due to strict screening protocols.

HIV is not transmitted through:

  • Kissing

  • Touching

  • Frottage

  • Sharing utensils

  • Saliva

  • Rimming

Understanding real transmission routes reduces unnecessary anxiety.

HIV Symptoms

Not everyone develops symptoms after acquiring HIV.

Some individuals experience a seroconversion illness approximately 2–4 weeks after infection. This early phase may resemble a viral flu-like illness and can include:

  • Fever

  • Sore throat

  • Fatigue

  • Muscle aches

  • Rash

  • Swollen lymph glands

Because these symptoms are non-specific, many people do not realise they have been infected.

After this early stage, HIV may remain asymptomatic for years without treatment. During this time, the virus continues to damage the immune system.

This is why testing, not symptoms, is key to diagnosis.

HIV Testing Options

Modern HIV testing is highly accurate and tailored to the time since possible exposure.

Early HIV RNA Test

This detects the virus directly and can be performed from 10 days after exposure. Results are often available the same day. It detects HIV-1 only.

5th Generation HIV Test (Antigen/Antibody Test)

This blood test detects both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen. It is highly accurate from 28 days post-exposure.

Choosing the right test depends on timing and risk. We provide personalised advice to ensure accurate results.

Routine HIV testing is recommended for:

  • Men who have sex with men

  • Individuals with multiple partners

  • Those with a recent STI diagnosis

  • Anyone starting PrEP

  • Anyone concerned about a recent exposure

HIV Treatment: Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)

If diagnosed early, HIV is treated with antiretroviral medication (ART).

Modern ART:

  • Suppresses the virus to undetectable levels

  • Prevents immune system damage

  • Is usually one tablet daily

  • Has minimal side effects for most people

With consistent treatment, viral load becomes undetectable within months.

This leads to one of the most important public health messages in HIV medicine:

U = U (Undetectable = Untransmittable)

An individual living with HIV who is on treatment and has an undetectable viral load cannot pass HIV on to sexual partners.

This is backed by large international studies and has transformed HIV care.

Early diagnosis and immediate treatment — known as “test and treat” — have driven the decline in new UK infections.

PrEP – Preventing HIV Before Exposure

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a daily medication taken by HIV-negative individuals to prevent infection.

When taken correctly, PrEP reduces the risk of HIV acquisition by over 99% during sexual contact.

PrEP is particularly relevant for:

  • MSM with multiple partners

  • Individuals with HIV-positive partners

  • Those who do not consistently use condoms

  • Individuals engaging in higher-risk sexual networks

PrEP does not protect against other STIs, so regular screening remains essential.

We provide PrEP consultations, testing, and monitoring.

PEP – Emergency HIV Prevention

PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is emergency medication taken after potential HIV exposure.

PEP must be started within 72 hours of exposure to be effective.

It is taken for 28 days and significantly reduces the chance of becoming HIV positive.

Situations where PEP may be indicated include:

  • Condom failure during anal sex

  • Needle sharing

  • Sexual assault

Urgent assessment is required if you believe you may need PEP.

HIV in the LGBTQ+ Community

The decline in new infections among MSM in the UK is one of the great public health successes of the last decade. However, continued testing, prevention, and open conversations remain vital.

Stigma around HIV still exists, and some individuals delay testing due to fear or misunderstanding.

We provide:

  • LGBTQ+ affirming care

  • Confidential consultations

  • Non-judgmental testing

  • Clear prevention advice

  • Ongoing monitoring for those on PrEP

Sexual health should be proactive, not reactive.

Living With HIV

With modern treatment, people living with HIV:

  • Have a near-normal life expectancy

  • Can have healthy relationships

  • Can have children safely

  • Can work, travel, and live normally

Early treatment protects long-term health and eliminates transmission risk.

Regular monitoring includes:

  • Viral load testing

  • CD4 count

  • Kidney and liver function checks

Medication adherence is essential for maintaining an undetectable status.

When Should You Get Tested?

You should consider HIV testing if:

  • You have had unprotected anal or vaginal sex

  • You have a new sexual partner

  • You are starting or currently taking PrEP

  • You have another STI

  • You are experiencing symptoms consistent with seroconversion

  • You simply want reassurance

Routine testing is an important part of responsible sexual health.
