Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based talking therapy designed to help you identify and change unhelpful patterns of thinking that influence emotions and behaviour. It is practical, goal-focused, and centred on developing skills that create lasting psychological change.

How CBT Works: Thoughts, Feelings and Behaviour

CBT is based on the understanding that thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and behaviours are interconnected. Unhelpful thinking patterns can trigger negative emotional and physical responses, which in turn reinforce difficult behaviours.

Therapy focuses on identifying these cycles and helping you challenge and reframe unhelpful thoughts. By doing so, you develop healthier coping strategies and more balanced emotional responses.

What to Expect From Therapy

CBT begins with a structured assessment to understand your goals, current challenges, and any contributing factors. Treatment is collaborative and tailored to your needs.

Most therapy plans involve between 6 and 20 focused sessions. The emphasis is on practical tools and techniques that you can apply in everyday situations, both during and after therapy.

Conditions We Support

Our in-house psychotherapist provides CBT for a range of common mental health concerns, offering personalised, collaborative treatment plans for adults.

Anxiety and Panic Disorder

CBT helps reduce fear-based thinking, manage anticipatory anxiety, and address physical symptoms such as rapid heartbeat and hyperventilation.

Work-Related Stress and Perfectionism

CBT offers practical strategies to manage workplace stress, burnout, and perfectionistic thinking, helping build resilience, assertiveness, and healthier self-expectations.

Anger Difficulties

Therapy supports improved emotional awareness, impulse control, and constructive responses to perceived injustice or conflict.

Depression

CBT is an effective treatment for depression, targeting negative thinking patterns, low motivation, and behavioural withdrawal to improve mood and functioning.

ADHD in Adults

CBT for adult ADHD focuses on time management, organisation, emotional regulation, and reducing procrastination through structured, goal-oriented interventions.

Is CBT Recommended by NICE?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a clinically effective treatment for a range of mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders and depression.

Can CBT Help with ADHD?

Research supports CBT as an effective psychological intervention for adults with ADHD. It can help address executive functioning challenges and is beneficial both alongside medication and as a standalone approach.

FOCUS Attention Assessment in Canary Wharf

At Dr Wayne Cottrell & Co, we offer the FOCUS Attention Assessment in Canary Wharf for adults and children who may be struggling with concentration, impulsivity, distractibility or attention-related difficulties.

In a demanding environment such as Canary Wharf and the City of London, problems with attentional control can affect work performance, decision-making, relationships and overall well-being. We also see patients whose difficulties with impulse control may contribute to self-destructive or high-risk behaviours.

To help assess these concerns, we have partnered with FOCUS Attention.

What is the FOCUS Attention Assessment?

The FOCUS Attention Assessment is a computerised, norm-referenced test designed to measure key areas of attentional control, including:

  • Consistency
  • Performance
  • Impulsivity
  • Auditory distraction
  • Visual distraction

FOCUS has been administered more than 15,000 times and has been standardised and validated twice since 2015. Although it is not a diagnostic tool on its own, it can provide valuable information to support the assessment of attention difficulties and help monitor progress during treatment.

Who is it for?

The assessment is suitable for adults and children who may be experiencing:

  • Poor concentration
  • Impulsivity
  • Distractibility
  • Attention-related difficulties at work or school
  • Problems with consistency or task performance
  • Concerns about focus, productivity or self-control

How does the test work?

The FOCUS test can be completed in clinic or at home on your computer and takes around 20 minutes.

It is designed to provide an objective overview of how attentional control may be affecting daily life, helping patients and clinicians make more informed decisions about the next steps.

Benefits of the FOCUS Attention Assessment

The assessment can help by:

  • Providing an objective view of cognitive strengths and weaknesses
  • Identifying factors that may be affecting performance, behaviour or wellbeing
  • Supporting decisions around further assessment, treatment or intervention
  • Monitoring progress over time

Private attention assessment in Canary Wharf

If you are looking for a private attention assessment in Canary Wharf, the FOCUS Attention Assessment offers a practical and efficient way to better understand concentration, impulsivity and distraction.

Sometimes, a clearer understanding of attention and impulse control can be the first step towards improving both work and personal life.
