CBT for Anxiety, Stress, Depression & ADHD
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based talking therapy that helps you understand how your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and behaviours are interconnected. At our Canary Wharf clinic, CBT is delivered in a collaborative, goal-focused way, empowering you with skills that can be applied long after therapy ends.
CBT is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for a range of common mental health conditions.

What to Expect from CBT
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy begins with a structured assessment designed to understand your current difficulties, triggers, personal history, and goals. Therapy is collaborative. You and your therapist will identify specific patterns contributing to distress and agree on a practical treatment plan tailored to you.
A typical course of CBT lasts between 6 and 20 sessions, each around 50 minutes. Sessions are structured and goal-focused. Rather than simply talking through problems, CBT is an active therapy that teaches you to recognise unhelpful thinking styles, understand behavioural responses, and apply practical coping strategies in everyday life.
The aim is not just short-term symptom relief, but long-term resilience. Over time, you learn to challenge negative thought patterns independently and manage future difficulties with greater confidence.
Our in-house psychotherapist offers a complimentary 15-minute discovery call to determine whether CBT is the right approach for you. Appointments can be booked directly online or arranged through your GP.
Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety is more than occasional worry. It can present as persistent fear, apprehension, or dread, often accompanied by physical symptoms such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, muscle tension, irritability, insomnia, and difficulty concentrating. When anxiety becomes chronic, it can interfere with work, relationships, and overall well-being.
Social anxiety involves a fear of embarrassment or negative judgment in social situations. Individuals may avoid conversations, meetings, or events due to fear of humiliation.
Generalised anxiety is characterised by ongoing worry about multiple aspects of life, often accompanied by rumination — repetitive, intrusive thinking about potential worst-case scenarios.
Panic disorder occurs when someone experiences recurrent panic attacks and develops a persistent fear of having another one. Panic attacks can involve sudden, rapid heartbeat, breathlessness, dizziness, a sense of detachment, or fear of losing control.
CBT helps break the cycle between anxious thoughts, physical sensations, and avoidance behaviours by teaching you to reinterpret symptoms and gradually reduce fear responses.
Work-Related Stress & Burnout
The workplace is a common source of psychological strain. Persistent pressure without adequate recovery can lead to emotional exhaustion, irritability, poor sleep, reduced concentration, and decreased productivity. If left unmanaged, chronic stress can evolve into burnout or depression.
Perfectionism frequently underpins workplace stress. While ambition and high standards can be positive, rigid perfectionism links self-worth to performance. This often results in chronic self-criticism, fear of failure, procrastination, and emotional exhaustion.
CBT — and in some cases REBT (Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy) helps individuals challenge rigid beliefs, develop assertiveness, improve resilience, and manage criticism or setbacks more effectively. Therapy focuses on practical strategies to reduce stress while maintaining performance.
Anger Management
Anger is a natural emotional response and can be helpful when it motivates constructive change. However, when anger becomes frequent, intense, or poorly regulated, it can negatively impact relationships, work life, and physical health.
Problematic anger may present as verbal confrontation, aggressive body language, resentment, or physical agitation such as sweating and a racing heart. Some individuals struggle to be aware of how their anger affects others.
CBT helps identify the underlying beliefs and triggers driving anger responses. By increasing emotional awareness and restructuring thought patterns, individuals learn healthier coping strategies and improved communication skills.
Depression
Depression is characterised by persistent low mood and loss of interest or pleasure in previously enjoyable activities. Negative thinking patterns are often central to the condition, including self-criticism, hopelessness, and pessimism about the future.
Depression may also affect concentration, sleep, appetite, energy levels, and libido. Behaviourally, individuals may withdraw from social activities and reduce engagement with daily responsibilities.
CBT is a first-line treatment for mild to moderate depression and is recommended by NICE guidelines. It works by addressing the cognitive patterns that maintain low mood while gradually reintroducing behavioural activation to rebuild motivation and confidence. In some cases, CBT can be used alongside antidepressant medication under GP supervision.
ADHD in Adults
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects attention, organisation, impulse control, and emotional regulation. While often identified in childhood, many adults receive a diagnosis later in life after recognising persistent patterns of difficulty.
Common symptoms include poor time management, forgetfulness, restlessness, emotional impulsivity, and difficulty sustaining focus. Medication is frequently prescribed by a psychiatrist and monitored with GP involvement.
CBT can provide significant benefits for adults with ADHD by focusing on practical daily challenges. Therapy supports improvements in time management, organisational skills, procrastination, and emotional regulation. Sessions are structured and goal-driven, helping patients achieve measurable progress in real-world functioning.
Why Choose CBT?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is structured, time-limited, and evidence-based. It is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for a wide range of mental health conditions.
Unlike open-ended therapies, CBT focuses on skills development. The goal is to help you become your own therapist, able to recognise unhelpful patterns and respond differently in future situations. This makes CBT both practical and empowering.
Is CBT Right for You?
CBT may be appropriate if you are experiencing persistent anxiety, panic attacks, workplace stress, burnout, anger difficulties, low mood, perfectionism, or ADHD-related challenges.
Early psychological intervention can significantly improve long-term outcomes and prevent symptoms from becoming more entrenched.
