As parents, our number one priority is keeping our children safe, happy, and healthy. One of the most powerful ways we can do this is through vaccinations. Vaccines not only protect children from serious diseases, but they also give families peace of mind knowing their little ones are shielded from illnesses that can otherwise cause real harm.At our clinic, we work with families who choose private healthcare and want flexibility, reassurance, and personal care when it comes to their children’s vaccinations. Some families come to us exclusively, while others come privately for convenience, additional protection, or a calmer, more child-friendly setting. With over 10 years’ experience as a paediatric nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital and as a mum myself, I understand both the professional and personal importance of protecting children through vaccination.

Core Children’s Vaccinations

Children in the UK are usually recommended a set of “core” vaccines to protect against serious diseases, such as:

  • 6-in-1 vaccine: protects against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, Hib, and hepatitis B.
  • The rotavirus vaccine (oral drops) protects against severe diarrhoea and vomiting in babies.
  • Meningitis B (MenB): protects against one of the leading causes of meningitis and septicaemia in young children.
  • Pneumococcal (PCV): protects against infections such as pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis caused by pneumococcal bacteria.
  • MMR vaccine: protects against measles, mumps, and rubella.
  • Hib/MenC: protects against Hib and meningitis C.
  • Pre-school boosters: a vital top-up before children start school, protecting against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, and polio.
  • Teenage vaccines: including meningitis ACWY and boosters for tetanus, diphtheria, and polio.
  • HPV vaccine: protects against cancers caused by the human papillomavirus.

While we may not offer every vaccine on this schedule, we do provide many of them, and there are often private alternatives available. The best way to know exactly what your child is due and what we can provide is to book a consultation appointment with me.

During this sit-down session, I’ll go through your child’s vaccination history, identify any gaps, and create a bespoke vaccination plan tailored specifically for your child and your family’s needs.

Additional Protection (Optional or Private Choice Children’s Vaccinations)

Beyond the core vaccines, many families also choose additional protection through private vaccination, including:

  • The chickenpox vaccine helps prevent chickenpox and its complications, making it especially useful for families who want to avoid time off school or work.
  • Flu vaccine: suitable for children from 6 months old. This is a great option for families who want consistent yearly protection.
  • Travel vaccines: for families travelling abroad, we can provide tailored advice and protection, including yellow fever, hepatitis A, rabies, and typhoid. This is particularly important for destinations such as Nigeria, Ghana, Asia, or South America.

What to Expect at the Clinic

I know that bringing your child for vaccines can feel daunting. My role is to make the experience as calm, gentle, and positive as possible for both children and parents.

Here’s what you can expect when you visit us:

  • Parents are encouraged to bring along their child’s favourite toy, blanket, or comfort item to help keep them calm and settled.
  • I speak directly to your child as well as to you, helping them feel involved and safe.
  • Vaccines are given quickly, gently, and with clear explanations.
  • After their jab, children get to choose a small toy or goodie (depending on age) from my “bravery box” just a little collection of fun bits I’ve sourced to reward them for being so brave.
  • Parents are given simple aftercare advice and time to ask questions.

I know how to balance professionalism with genuine care and reassurance.
