Chlamydia
- Can cause infection in the vagina, urethra, rectum, throat and or eyes
- Spreads through unprotected penetrative sex, sharing sex toys or getting bodily fluids into the eye
- It’s extremely contagious
Symptoms
- Asymptomatic in 50%
- Dysuria (painful urination)
- Penile, vaginal discharge
- Lower abdominal pain/contact bleeding during sex, intermenstrual bleeding
- Itching, and tingling in the penis
- Rectal itching or discharge
- Throat infections are usually asymptomatic
Complications
- Epididymo-orchitis
- Sexually acquired reactive arthritis
- PID
- Infertility, Preterm and stillbirth
- Higher risk of ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage
- Passing on the infection to their child during childbirth
Testing and Treatment
- Swabs are taken from the affected area (female) or urine (males)
- Tests are accurate from 2 weeks post-contact
- If you develop symptoms before that time, you should still see a doctor
- Chlamydia can be treated effectively with antibiotics that can be provided onsite. No need to queue at the pharmacy
- We advise sexual partners to be tested and treated
- You will need to abstain from sex for a week post-treatment
