Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases

Chlamydia

  • Can cause infection in the vagina, urethra, rectum, throat and or eyes
  • Spreads through unprotected penetrative sex, sharing sex toys or getting bodily fluids into the eye
  • It’s extremely contagious

Symptoms

  • Asymptomatic in 50%
  • Dysuria (painful urination)
  • Penile, vaginal discharge
  • Lower abdominal pain/contact bleeding during sex, intermenstrual bleeding
  • Itching, and tingling in the penis
  • Rectal itching or discharge
  • Throat infections are usually asymptomatic

Complications

  • Epididymo-orchitis
  • Sexually acquired reactive arthritis
  • PID
  • Infertility, Preterm and stillbirth
  • Higher risk of ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage
  • Passing on the infection to their child during childbirth

Testing and Treatment

  • Swabs are taken from the affected area (female) or urine (males)
  • Tests are accurate from 2 weeks post-contact
  • If you develop symptoms before that time, you should still see a doctor
  • Chlamydia can be treated effectively with antibiotics that can be provided onsite. No need to queue at the pharmacy
  • We advise sexual partners to be tested and treated
  • You will need to abstain from sex for a week post-treatment
