There have been calls for gay men in New York, including gay visitors to the city, to get vaccinated against meningitis, following a recent deadly outbreak in the city.

Since August of 2012 there has been a total of 12 confirmed cases, many of these patients are also HIV positive and therefore more at risk, but the advice to get vaccinated is aimed at the whole if the gay community.

Of even bigger concern is that the number of cases seem to be escalating with 4 diagnosis in the past 4 weeks alone ,with one confirmed death.
Meningitis symptoms, including headache, fever, stiff neck and a rash, come on quickly and it can cause death within a few hours.
The advice is for any sexually active gay men planning to visit New York, to get vaccinated before their visit, and to see a doctor immediately if they become unwell
